TAKE THE BOOK, DEVOUR IT
You must prophesize again


1. When the seventh seal is opened, a series of seven trumpets appear (Rev 8, 1-2). What do they mean?  In the novel “The name of the rose” (Umberto Eco, 1980) an old monk proclaims the play of the seven trumpets in the mysterious series of crimes that take place in the old abbey, but the deaths have a cause that it is necessary to investigate, they are signal that something rare is happening in the abbey. The trumpet convokes the community (Nm 10,2), calls to combat (Jr 61; Jos 6, 1-16), proclaims events (2 Sm 15, 10), resound in the teophanies (Ex 19, 16-19; Hb 12, 19), announces the day of the Lord, his action in the history, his judgement (Jl 2, 1; Zep 1, 16), it convokes those elected (Mt 24, 31; 1 Ts 4, 16). 2. John contemplates an angel “standing near the altar, with a golden censer” to whom many perfumes are delivered so that he offers them with the prayers of the saints (Rev 8,3). The prayer is like incense: “Let my prayer go up like incense in your presence” (Ps 141). The angel “took the censer and filled it up with embers from the altar and he dropped it over the land. Then there was thunders, roar, lightening and earthquake” (Rev 8, 5; Ex 30, 1-10). God´s judgement is like a thunder: “The God of the glory thunders” (Ps 29), “before him is a devouring fire, around him a raging storm”. (Ps 50), “Flash forth lightning and rout the foe” (Ps 144)

3. The Jewish Pasch was near and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. The High Priests had ordered to arrest him (Jn 11, 57). Jesus prays then: “Now my soul is in distress. Shall I say: ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But, I have come to this hour to face all this. Father!, glorify your Name!”, “Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it and I will glorify it again.”. People standing there heard something and said it was thunder; but others said, “An angel was speaking to him.” Then Jesus declared, “This voice did not come for my sake but for yours; now sentence is being passed on this world”. (12, 27-31). Paul advises not to give back evil for evil to anybody: “I will repay, says the Lord. And it adds: If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon his head” (Rm 12, 14-19).
4. Now well, seven angels got ready to play the seven trumpets. The first one played: “rained then hail and fire mixed with blood… the third part of the earth rested burnt” (Ex 9, 24; Jl 3, 3). The second one played: “Something like an enormous burning mountain was then thrown to the sea, and the third part of the sea become blood” (Jr 51, 25; Ex 7, 20). The third one played: “A large star, burning like a torch, fell then down from the sky. It fell down over the third part of the rivers and over the sources of water… and many people died because of the waters, that had become bitter” (Is 14, 12; Jr 9, 14). The fourth one played. “ The third part of the sun, the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars were then wounded… the day lost the third part of its brightness and the same happened to the night” (Ex 10, 21-23). They are disasters of the world that goes in contrary direction to God´s project. They recall Egypt’s plagues (Wis 16-19). The respected sector is larger that the devastated one. In spite of everything, a new world is being born. They are “labour pains” (Mt 24, 8). During the black plague that devastated Europe (c. XIV) 24 million people died, a third of the population. After the fourth trumpet, “I noticed an eagle flying through the highest heaven and crying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the land when the last three angels sound their trumpets.” (Rev 8, 6-12). As Jesus says, “where the corpse is, the eagles will join” (Mt 24, 28).
5. The fifth angel blew his trumpet: “I then saw a star fall from heaven to earth. The star was given the key to the depths of the abyss and a cloud of smoke rose (like in Sodoma, Gn 19, 28)… and the sun and the air darkened (Ex 10. 14-15).. Locusts came from this smoke and spread through out the earth. They were given the same harm full power as the scorpions of the earth… Then they were told not to harm the meadows… only the people who do not bear the seal of God on their foreheads. They were not to kill them, but only torture them for five months… These locusts look like horses equipped for battle (Wis 16, 9; Am 7, 1-2)… The first woe has passed. Two others are to come” (Rev , 1-12). The star that has fallen from the heaven, is it a dethroned tyrant? (Is 14, 12). John has before him events of his time. According to Josefo, the turbulences that took place in Palestine under roman governor Floro Gessius (64-66) lasted for five months. Floro, who arrived like Albino’s successor, ordered not to devastate the country, not touch the meadows, but “he caused the Jews so many calamities that obliged him to raise on arms” In the Evangels there are correspondence with the three woes: war, hunger, plague, earthquakes (Mt 24, 4-8; Mk 13, 5-8; Lk 21, 8-11), persecutions of the believers (Mt 24, 9-14; Mk 13, 9-13; Lk 21, 12- 19), the abomination of the desolation (Mt 24, 15-28; Mk 13, 14-29; Lk 21, 20-24)

6. The sixth angle blew the trumpet: “Then I heard a voice saying: release the four angels chained at the banks of the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were released… ready to utterly destroy a third of the mankind. The number of the soldiers on horses was two hundred million”, “but the rest of humankind… they did not repent of their crimes, or their sorcery, or their sexual immorality or their theft.” (Rev 9, 13-21). The region to the east of the Euphrates was occupied by the Persians, who were the terror of the roman empire, although the number of their number was clearly exorbitant. In the year 62 the Persians defeated the Romans in Armenia. In the World War II (1935 – 1945) there was between 50 and 70 million dead.
7. John also sees “another powerful angel who came down from heaven wrapped in a cloud, with the rainbow over his head, his face like the sun and his legs like fire columns. In his hands he had a small book opened. He placed his right foot over the sea and the left one over the land, and he shouted with a strong voice”. When he shouted, seven thunders make their roar audible. John was prepared to write when he heard a voice from heaven telling him: “Seal what the seven thunders have said and don’t write it”. By then the angel that was standing over the sea and the land, he raised his right hand and he swear on behalf of that who lives for ever: “There will be no more delay!”, when the seventh trumpet is heard , “God´s mystery would had been carried out” (Rev 10, 1-7)
8. The voice from heaven that John had heard, talk to him again and told him: “Go near the angel who stands on the sea and on the land, and take the small book opened in his hand.” John approached the angel and asked him for the small book. The angel told him: “Take the book and devour it; although it will be sweet like honey in your mouth, it will be bitter to your stomach.” About which book are we talking about? John has in front of him the passage of Ezekiel’s vocation. The book is written down on the front and on the back: “Sorrows, groans and woes” John took the book from the hand of the angel and devoured it; it was sweet like honey in his mouth, but when he had eaten it, it turned bitter in his stomach. Then he was told: “You must prophesize again” (Rev 10, 8-11).
9. John then receives a measuring stick. He is told: “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count those who worship there. Do not bother to measure the outer courtyard, because it has been given to the pagans who will trample over the Holy City for forty-two months. Mean while, I will entrust my Word to my two witnesses who will proclaim it for one thousand two hundred and sixty days, dressed in sackcloth. They are the two olive trees and the two lamps which are before the Lord of the earth.” (Rev 11, 1-4; Ez 40, 3; Ze 2, 5-9; 4, 11-14), “But when my witnesses have fulfilled their mission, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war upon them, and will conquer and kill them. But after those three and a half days, a spirit of life coming from God entered them. They then stood up… At that moment, there was a violent earthquake which destroyed a tenth of the city and claimed seven thousand victims. The rest were overcome with fear, and acknowledged the God of heaven. The second woe has passed. The third is coming soon.” (Rev 11, 7-14). During Nero’s persecution (64-67) Peter and Paul are tormented. Rome´s fire (year 64) was terrible. According to roman historian Tacitus, of the ten districts of the city, ten were devastated (Annals XV, 38-49). So, more than  “the tenth of the city”. If the authors of the fire were looking for another thing, it went out of their hands. During the Jewish war (67-70) the temple is destroyed (see Mt 24, 2), The cipher of the beast (666) “is the cipher of a man”
10. The seventh angel blew his trumpet: “Then loud voices resounded in heaven: “The world has now become the kingdom of our God and of his Christ. He will reign for ever and ever.” The twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God bowed down to worship God, saying: “We thank you, Lord God,  Master of the universe, who are and who were, for you have begun your reign, making use of your invincible power.” The time to judge the nations has arrived (Mt 25), the time to “deliver the reward to your servants the prophets, to the saints” and the time to “destroy to those who destroy the earth” (Rev 11, 14-18). Happen whatever may happen, God has the last word upon human history.
